About Direct Mail
Direct mail is a powerful advertising and promotional medium. It lets you communicate one-on-one with customers and prospects by using words, colors, and graphics to express a message. You can target a specific audience, directing your message to the people whom you want to reach – as well as personalizing a message.Direct mail is an adaptable medium. You can send a variety of media, including brochures, postcards, letters, newsletters, promotional videos or DVDs, or packages containing a free product sample.
Direct mail is a touchable physical medium. Recipients can hold it, feel it, keep it, and refer to it again as often as they wish.
Direct mail is a measurable medium. You can track a campaign’s results by coding your material. When you analyze results on a continuing basis, you can focus your efforts on mailing lists with the best response rate, making your campaigns highly cost-effective.
Direct mail is a popular medium. In a recent Pitney Bowes/International Communications Research study, 73 percent of consumers said they prefer to receive product announcements and offers by mail from companies they know, compared to 18 percent for email. Also, only 31 percent of people who receive unsolicited direct mail routinely throw it away, compared to 53 percent who routinely delete unsolicited email.
Growth and effectiveness
The volume of direct mail is growing, as increasing numbers of businesses and organizations discover the power of this versatile promotional medium. In 1977, the U.S. Postal Service delivered 34.2 billion pieces of direct mail, comprising 37.1 percent of all delivered mail.
By comparison, the U.S.P.S. delivered more than 106.5 billion pieces of direct mail in 2007 – and for the first time in history, direct mail in 2007 comprised over half of all mail (50.2 percent of the total) delivered by the U.S.P.S.
Also in 2007, direct-mail advertising expenditures totaled $55.3 billion, up $15 billion (37.2 percent) from 2002, according to the Direct Marketing Association.
DMA calculations show direct mail’s power, with every $1 spent on direct-mail advertising generating an average of $11 in sales – more than twice as much as any other direct-marketing medium.
Let Post-It Inc. help you use direct mail to maximize the return on your promotional dollars.
